Summer Intern, The Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, South Dakota

The Mammoth Site is a natural trap of late Pleistocene fauna. Over 10,000 vertebrate and invertebrate fossils have been uncovered at the Mammoth Site through the 2008 field season. About 3,500 of these bones belong to Columbian and Wooly mammoths, and more than 2,000 of these bones are preserved in-situ.
The bones of 28 other vertebrate species found at the site are stored in our well-equipped preparation laboratory and bone repository.

Position: Six seasonal internships are available, starting in either May or June and ending in August or September (to fit your academic schedule). These are full-time positions (40 hrs/wk) paying $7.25 per hour, with free housing. You will be working between 400 and 640 hours over the course of the summer (10-16 weeks; that may include some weekends).

Responsibilities: The position will involve conducting educational tours for the general public (20 hours per week) and preserving and preparing Pleistocene fossil material in the lab and in the bonebed (20 hours per week).
In addition, there will be opportunities to learn molding and casting, and bonebed cartography.

Minimum Qualifications: You must be at least an undergraduate student in biology, geology, anthropology, museum studies, or a related field. You should also have some experience working with natural history collections, knowledge of anatomy, and familiarity with computers, database programs and digital cameras. You needn't be an expert in any of those fields, however.
Good organizational skills and attention to details are a plus, as is the ability to work independently. Interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with the public are both very important. You should be able to lift 35 lbs.
Foreign students are welcome to apply, but there are some extra conditions. In the last few years it has become increasingly difficult to obtain work visas in this country - the quota for the year is exhausted in the first few days of January. With the current economic downturn, we expect the situation to worsen. Foreign students have three chances for employment at The Mammoth Site. First, those with existing student visas should be able to obtain employment without difficulty, provided they apply early. Second, foreigners who send in their applications by mid-December have a small chance at obtaining a work visa. Finally, students willing to work on a volunteer basis can get here with an easy-to-obtain tourist visa.

Preferred Qualifications:
- One year or more of vertebrate paleontology preparation, invertebrate preparation and/or museum curatorial experience in Pleistocene vertebrate paleontology.
- Experience in education program development and delivery.
- A working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access, and ArcGIS software.
- Experience with public speaking and guide/docent work.

Housing: Housing is available on Mammoth Site property at no cost to the intern.

Send applications to: Don Esker, Bonebed Curator/Educator Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, South Dakota, Inc.

Colorado Desert District (CDD) Paleontologist, California Department of Parks and Recreation

The Paleontology Society is assisting in the recruitment of the District Paleontologist (DP). We anticipate filling this position, currently held by George Jefferson, in late 2009. The DP leads a well-established, ongoing program charged with protecting and preserving CDD's paleontology resources. The program includes field surveying, fossil recovery, preparation, and curation, as well as maintaining the CDD's existing fossil collection of ~30,000 specimens. The DP conducts research, and supports research at the CDD by outside scientists. The DP currently supervises 3 part-time, paid field-staff, and over 40 active volunteers (equivalent to ~4 full-time employees). The DP oversees CDD's highly respected program for training paleontology volunteers, and supports educational and interpretive programs for the CDD.

Candidates should have a degree in paleontology or equivalent education/experience, have substantial knowledge of geology, and have an established research history with a focus on the Neogene of North American vertebrate paleontology. An advanced degree is desirable. Candidates should be collaborative, accustomed to working both as a leader and in supporting roles. Experience within a government system is desirable.

The CDD includes six State Parks in southeastern California. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park alone has over 100,000 acres of sedimentary deposits, both marine and terrestrial, spanning a period from 10 million to less than 10,000 years ago. The most significant and abundant fossil remains are from the late Miocene through mid-Pleistocene. The paleontology resources are located on the margins of the Salton Trough, an active plate boundary.

The job is based at the CDD Stout Research Center, which houses the conservation laboratory and collections facilities. It is located in the pleasant desert community of Borrego Springs, a town of ~3,000 (with an additional 4,000 winter residents).

Potential applicants should contact ingwallr@mac.com for more information.

Summer Field Coordinator, Museum of Western Colorado

The Museum of Western Colorado has an opening for a summer field position at the Mygatt-Moore Quarry (Morrison Formation), based out of Fruita, Colorado. As Field Coordinator, the successful applicant will be responsible for working with a field assistant and several volunteers under the direction of the museum Curator to oversee the excavation of mostly dinosaur material. This position requires working with members of the public. Main duties include: overseeing the maintenance and preparation of field tools and equipment, introducing participants to field tools and techniques of excavation, overseeing dig operations, mapping and numbering materials in the field, covering quarry daily, securing supplies and transporting participants, preparing specimens in the lab, and performing other lab, collections, and field projects as needed. The quarry produces mainly sauropod and Allosaurus material, so experience identifying Late Jurassic dinosaur elements in the field is a plus. The position requires good verbal communications skills and the ability to perform physical labor in very hot and dry conditions. Although the successful applicant will be working under the direction of the Curator, he or she will be overseeing the work of at least one other paid employee (Field Assistant) and up to a half-dozen volunteers, plus dig participants. Therefore this position requires the ability to manage the quarry operation independently. Past experience working with the public in museum/field projects very much preferred.

The position term is June 2 - August 29, 2008, and the pay is $9/hr or approximately $360/week. The position also includes housing near the museum.

Any questions in reference to this position should be directed to John Foster at: 970-858-7282 or jfoster@westcomuseum.org

Applicants should send cover letter, CV, and names and contact information for three references to:

John Foster, Curator of Paleontology, Museum of Western Colorado, P.O. Box 20,000, Grand Junction, CO 81502

The application deadline is February 22.

If you are considering the fellowship, please carefully review our revised instructions, which are given below and also available on the web at: http://www.agiweb.org/gap/csf/index.html

The successful candidate will spend 12 months (starting September 2008) in Washington working as a staff member in the office of a member of Congress or a congressional committee. The fellowship represents a unique opportunity to gain first-hand experience with the federal legislative process and make practical contributions to the effective and timely use of geoscientific knowledge on issues relating to the environment, resources, natural hazards, and federal science policy.

The AGI Fellow will join more than two dozen other scientists and engineers for an intensive orientation program on the legislative and executive branches, organized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), which also guides the placement process and provides educational and collegial programs for the fellows throughout the year.

The Fisher Endowment

Funding for the fellowship is provided through an endowment recently established by the AGI Foundation to honor William L. Fisher, the Leonidas T. Barrow Chair in the Department of Geosciences and the director of the John A. and Katherine G. Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas, Austin. For three decades, as director of the Bureau of Economic Geology, Fisher was the state geologist of Texas. At the national level, Fisher served as Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Energy and Minerals under President Ford. Over several administrations, he has been an advisor to the President and to the Secretaries of Energy and the Interior, and he has chaired numerous National Research Council committees and boards. For more on Fisher and the endowment, please see the column "Endowing the AGI Congressional Fellowship" in the October 2003 Geotimes. Also available is a press release announcing the endowment.

The fellowship carries an annual stipend of up to $55,000 plus allowances for health insurance, relocation, and travel.

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, statement of purpose and a curriculum vitae and request three letters of reference. Candidates should ask three people to submit letters of reference through the online submission site, www.agiweb.org/gap/csf/application/ or by regular mail by the deadline given below.

The candidate’s cover letter should include an addendum listing your society memberships with membership numbers and the names and contact information of your three references. The statement of purpose should include your reasons for applying for this fellowship, what you would bring to the fellowship and what you hope to gain from the fellowship. The statement should be brief, no more than 1,000 words in length.

Please submit materials as a single Word document (.doc) or PDF (.pdf) using our new online submission form, www.agiweb.org/gap/csf/application/. You may also mail the materials to: William L. Fisher Congressional Geoscience Fellowship, American Geological Institute, 4220 King Street, Alexandria VA, 22302-1502.
