Letters from SVP's President

About the 2010 Annual Meeting (5/27/2010)

Dear Members and Colleagues

Each year's meeting presents different budget challenges. For example, meetings outside of North America carry a cost premium, those at a convention center carry space rental fees that are not incurred when all meeting space is at the host hotel, some venues have built-in union fees, some venues require busing costs, and some carry higher food and beverage costs. In the past, SVP heavily subsidized its annual meeting to keep registration rates low, but since 2009, this has no longer been possible in light of the economic downturn. For long-term fiscal stability, the annual meeting should pay for itself. Read more...

Welcome from the 2010 Host Committee

Members and friends of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology,

The Section of Vertebrate Paleontology at Carnegie Museum of Natural History is excited to host the annual meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology in Pittsburgh in 2010. This meeting celebrates the 70th anniversary of the SVP, and the official title for the meeting this year will be "SVP 70th Anniversary Meeting."

From its founding in 1895 right up to the present day, Carnegie Museum of Natural History has played a vital role in the development of vertebrate paleontology in North America. The SVP 70th Anniversary Meeting represents a homecoming for the Society, and it provides us with the opportunity to showcase the museum's recently renovated Mesozoic gallery, Dinosaurs in their Time.

About the 2010 Annual Meeting Logo

SVP 2010 Annual Meeting Logo

Fedexia of the Lower Permian of Western Pennsylvania comes forward to welcome SVP conference goers. This trematopid amphibian discovered near Pittsburgh is one of only three known trematopids from the earlier Pennsylvanian, and the only one known from Pennsylvania; the other two were found in Kansas and New Mexico. The description was recently published in Annals of Carnegie Museum. Fedexia, a true Pittsburgh ambassador, demonstrates that there still is much to be learned about our past, locked in the strata beneath our feet.  Mark A. Klingler of Carnegie Museum of Natural History enjoys working with researchers to reconstruct the unique stories of creatures from the past. Klingler is an award-winning scientific illustrator, naming among his honors the Lanzendorf award for Paleoart, a solo exhibition at AAAS, and works in media and publications worldwide. Klingler finds inspiration in his backyard with his family and the natural creatures who visit.
